Squealing or chirping from the engine
General info, not professional advice. These are common causes that apply to most cars, not a diagnosis of yours. If you are unsure or a problem affects brakes, steering, airbags or fuel, see a qualified mechanic.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Worn or glazed serpentine belt
It squeals on cold starts or when turning the wheel.
🔎 Find a used serpentine belt - Weak belt tensioner
The tensioner arm bounces, or the belt is loose.
🔎 Find a used belt tensioner - Bad idler or accessory pulley bearing
A chirp, or a grinding that follows engine speed.
🔎 Find a used idler pulley
Quick safe checks
- With the engine off, check the belt for cracks, missing chunks or shiny glazing.
- Watch the tensioner with the engine running, from a safe distance. Lots of bouncing means it may be weak.
- A light mist of water on the belt that briefly quiets it points to the belt. Don't use belt dressing as a fix.
Safety first
- ⚠️ Keep hands, hair and loose clothing away from belts and the cooling fan. The fan can turn on even with the engine off.
When to see a pro
The noise is a grinding or knocking rather than a squeal, or the belt has come off. You'd lose charging and possibly power steering and cooling.
