Headlights or electrical problems
General info, not professional advice. These are common causes that apply to most cars, not a diagnosis of yours. If you are unsure or a problem affects brakes, steering, airbags or fuel, see a qualified mechanic.
Likely causes (most common first)
- Burned-out bulb
One light out while the other works.
๐ Find a used headlight - Blown fuse
Several items on one circuit stop at once.
๐ Find a used fuse box - Bad ground or corroded connector
Flickering or intermittent operation.
๐ Find a used headlight - Failing switch or relay
Works sometimes, or only in certain switch positions.
๐ Find a used headlight switch - Weak charging system
Lights dim at idle and brighten when you rev.
๐ Find a used alternator
Quick safe checks
- Swap the bulb with a known-good one, or check the filament.
- Check fuses using the owner's manual diagram. Replace with the SAME amp rating only.
- Look for green corrosion in the bulb socket or connector.
Safety first
- โ ๏ธ Airbags can deploy with serious force. Don't probe airbag wiring (usually yellow connectors) or the steering wheel or dash modules. Leave airbag work to a pro.
- โ ๏ธ Car batteries can spark and give off explosive gas. Wear eye protection, take off metal jewelry, and disconnect the negative (โ) cable first.
When to see a pro
A fuse blows again right after you replace it (that's a short circuit), you smell melting plastic, or the problem involves airbags or the steering column.
